Igbo, Yoruba clash over leadership at Lagos market
The Yoruba and Igbo factions of a major association in the Olugbede Model Market in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos are poised for a showdown which could result to loss of lives and property if not nipped in the bud.
The Model Market was rated as one of the most peaceable markets in Lagos State until recently when crisis erupted among members of the GSM Association who constitutes about 95 per cent of the market population.
The situation would degenerate and extend to the host Egbeda community except urgent measures are taken by Lagos State Marketing Board, traditional rulers and other concerned authorities.
Historically, the Model market was reportedly started by some Yoruba traders about 40 years ago but due to the relocation challenges being faced by Ikeja GSM village, some Igbo GSM traders were said to have run to Olugbede Model market for succor and were received with open arms but gradually, the ‘visitors’ were said to have increased in number and dominated every sphere of the market.
Conducive accommodation
Also, because of the peaceful and friendly nature of the Yorubas, the Igbos were not only allocated shops and stalls but were assisted in securing conducive accommodation in Egbeda and its environs for stress free business transaction but the step was later regretted by the ‘hosts’ as the supposed ‘visitors’ seems to gain momentum and turned the table round, a step that has resulted into crises among traders of the model market as well as Egbeda youths who are uncomfortable with the way and manner their kinsmen are being treated.
For this reason, the Yoruba traders now liken the development to the case of a man who invited a neighbour to the dining table but due to the satisfaction derived from the delicacy, the neighbour turned around to hold-on to the feeding hand in order to take possession of the whole meal.
Vanguard findings revealed that the market christened the GSM Association for 15 years, was nurtured to make it ripe for leadership. Ever since the Igbos have cornered the major positions for a period of 12 years.
As another election approaches, an electoral committee was inaugurated to oversee the affairs of the market and supervise the forthcoming election. This has degenerated into crises which has brought about police intervention and if care is not taken, there could be a total breaking down of law and order within the market.
During Vanguard’s visits to the market, there was apprehension and division among the traders as Yorubas and Igbos no longer relate as one.
Also, police authorities have advised that the election be put on hold until normalcy returns to the market.
In a chat with some of the traders, they accused their leaders of mismanagement and insensitivity to members’ plight and prayed the government to intervene in the situation.
When Vanguard contacted the Chairman of the electoral body in a telephone conversation, he said his office was no longer relevant as the election had been put on hold, ‘’the crisis has gone beyond what we think and the Police have intervened. We were asked to suspend the election and put our house in order, as a result, I don’t think I am in the best position to handle any leadership role in the market,”
When the Chairman of the previous government was contacted, he simply said he was not in his best state of mind.
Meanwhile, the Iyaloja of the market Mrs Adebamowo Musili, said the market authorities are leaving no stone unturned to resolve the crisis, ‘’there is no way we will not misunderstand ourselves but it is our duty to resolve it. Both factions belong to us but nobody must be cheated,”
The leader of Egbeda youths, Wahab Okanlawon Ogunji, lamented that the situation if not nipped in the bud could cause breaking down of law and order in the area.
He however said the matter had been taken to the local council development area to no avail, “my sister, we cannot fold our arms and allow things to get out of hands, the traders who are mostly youths have cried to us and we have taken the matter to the LCDA but it is so painful that the Igbos are taking laws into their hands without fear nor favour.”
Effort to reach Iyaloja-General proved abortive as she did not respond to Vanguard calls.

10 Child Stars- SO cute then, not so cute now!
It is not easy being a child star or having huge success and popularity at a young age. Just look at the current Justin Bieber public melt down for an ongoing example of how easy it is for young stars to spin out of control. Many child stars do not look the same after they grow up. While it is unfair to call them all totally ugly, it is certainly easy to see many are not as cute as they once were.
Here is a top ten list of stars that changed dramatically, mostly for the worse, as they grew older.
1. Macaulay Culkin
In the hilarious movie Home Alone, released in 1990, Macaulay Culkin
co-starred with Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. The film was a huge box
office success turning into a franchise thereafter. Fast forward to
present time and Macaulay Culkin looks like Skeletor. He was even
reported as dead, which later turned out to be a hoax. He looks like the
walking dead. Maybe he should leave the drugs alone now.
2. Brian Bonall
This guy went from being adorably cute when he had the role of Andrew
Keaton, on the television show Family Ties to now being downright
scary-looking with a full neck tattoo and two lip rings. Lots of drug
use and being arrested for assault is his current state of affairs.
3. Edward Furlong
In 1991, when he starred in Terminator 2: Judgment Day he was a
handsome young actor. Now after spending time in jail, he looks like a
car crash waiting to happen. His looks have seriously deteriorated and
so has his psyche.
4. Haley Joel Osment
Who can forget the deeply moving 1999 film “The Sixth Sense” with
Haley Joel Osment co-starring with Bruce Willis and the catchphrase “I
see dead people.” Haley Joel Osment was not only adorable, he was
sensitive and his acting in that film was superb. He was only 11-years
old when he played the role in the film that brought big success to
director M. Night Shyamalan. He is still acting, but he got very fat and
is now more rotund than cute. He plays a Nazi in the upcoming movie,
“Yoga Hosers.”
5. Angus T. Jones
Best known for his role of Jake Harper in the television show “Two
and a Half Men,” Angus T. Jones went from cute kid to now sporting a
beard that looks like a cross between being Amish, homeless, and
Robinson Crusoe.
6. Mark Hamill
An unfortunate car accident affected Mark Hamill’s looks after the making of Star Wars in 1977.
He attempted to cross four lanes of traffic to get to his off ramp.
(Let that be a lesson to you–travel to the next ramp and backtrack
rather than making this dangerous maneuver.) Doctors had success
rebuilding his face resulting in only subtle differences from before.
Since, he has not lacked for work, even making use of his scars for his
character in The Empire Strikes Back. His current looks lend themselves to his, now, primary line of work—voice acting.
7. Lindsay Lohan
At one time Lindsay Lohan was adorable. In 1998, when she was only
11-years old she starred in the Disney remake of the film “The Parent
Trap” and in 2003, “Freaky Friday,” followed by a great performance in
the 2004 film “Mean Girls.” Since then, she has been in and out of rehab
so many times, she probably has a bed reserved in her name by now. She
looks run down and worn out.
8. Todd Bridges
He played Willis on the television show “Different Strokes.” At that
time, he had a big afro and looked great. Now he is bald and his big
egg-shaped head misses having that wonderful hair to cover it up.
9. Danny Bonaduce
He starred as the cute young kid in “The Partridge Family,” but heavy
drug and alcohol abuse shows now in his weathered looks. He got his act
together and tries to help others avoid the troubles he experienced.
10. Dustin Diamond
He played Screech in the television show “Saved by the Bell.” He is
not ugly, but what he had as a young actor with goofy charm did not
translate into adulthood with the same charm. There we have the sad state of affairs of some of our most favorite child and young actors. We can only hope the next generation of child stars has a better time growing up.

12 Boko Haram Wives Surrender To Civilian JTF
At least 12 wives of Boko Haram insurgents have surrendered to vigilantes in Askira-Uba LGA of Borno state.
According to Sahara Reporters, a Civilian JTF member in the area Apagu Istifanus disclosed that there had been two pregnant women among the women who had surrendered themselves between August 31 and September 1. The women explained how their husbands had abandoned them because of lack of food and fuel.
Istifanus was quoted as saying:
“On Monday four of them came to Askira. After thorough investigation they told us that their husbands could no longer feed them that they are many in the bush but more were still coming, they have been taken to Biu town for more information.

The vigilante attributed the development to the army successfully stopping supplies reaching the sect and to the generally brilliant performance of the troops in recent months.
A military source, who asked for anonymity, confirmed the incident adding that:
“You see we don’t disclose how we operate to journalists, but the truth is this, they (Boko Haram) are feeling the heat because most of their camps is either destroyed or taken over by our troops.”
It is known that the Nigerian military has stepped up operations against the dreaded sect, making it harder for the terrorists to get vital supplies.https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008164998687

11 Species-Bending Animals You Never Knew Existed
The animal world is filled with funny-looking combinations of creatures
that most people have no idea about. While these animals might not be
actual genetic crossbreeds – they certainly look like it! Here’s the
list that will let you impress your friends with your unusual knowledge
of fauna:
1. Anteater + armadillo = pangolin
This mammal, which resembles the armadillo (no relation) gets its name
from the Malay word “pengguling”, meaning “something that rolls up”. It
is native to tropical parts of Africa and Asia. Pangolins are covered in
large keratin scales for protection – the only mammal with such a
feature. Pangolins are nocturnal, live in trees and live on a diet of
ants and termites. This mammal, which resembles the armadillo (no relation) gets its name from the Malay word “pengguling”, meaning “something that rolls up”. Chibok Girls Turned Into Boko Haram Fighters?
One of returnees from Boko Haram camp has said that the abducted Chibok girls turned into terrorists.

The Nation reports that the shocking revelation was made on Sunday, September 13, by a 21-year-old Tabitha Adamu, one of the women freed from the sect’s camp and handed over to the Borno state government last week.
Tabitha noted that she had mingled with the girls at various times in the sect’s camp.
Speaking about her life in the camp, the woman revealed that one of the sect’s commanders forcibly married her and now she is expecting a baby.
Tabitha said that she was taken from Bayan Dutse in Gwoza local government area, when the insurgents invaded her village.

“They killed my father and brother. They took me along with my mother but at some point we were separated. Since then, I’ve not set my eyes on my mother. When he (Abu Kabir, my Boko Haram husband), wanted to marry me, he gave the women who were taking care of us N5,000 as my bride price.
“Before the marriage, I was asked to convert to Islam. I did so because many who refused were killed and they gave me a name (Samira). I answered the name but I know my true name is my real name. When we were rescued I told the soldiers that my name is Tabitha.
“They asked me if I am one of the wives of the Boko Haram and I told them my story. They felt for me and they treated me well.
“Many people asked me since we were liberated, particularly about the pregnancy. I don’t know the right answer to give because I actually do not know what to do. It has happened. I don’t know what the authorities would do about it but I think it is too late to abort it. But my prayer is that I give birth safely,” she said.

Tabitha revealed that before the abduction she completed her secondary education and earned a certificate in computer appreciation in Maiduguri. She added that she was hoping for a good future now because the Borno state government promised to help her and her child.
Meanwhile, the presidency has expressed confidence that the wave of Boko Haram attacks could end before the three-months deadline to stop the insurgency.
Mallam Garba Shehu, the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, said that hope was not yet lost on the efforts by Nigeria’s security forces to secure the freedom of the Chibok school girls.https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008164998687

US event honors labor hero to many, murderer to others
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Swedish-born labor activist and songwriter Joe
Hill is revered by many as a hero. To others, he was a murderer who
gunned down a Salt Lake City grocer and his son and got what he deserved
when he was executed by firing squad in 1915.
Duncan Phillips, center, performs a song by songwriter Joe Hill along
with Morgan Snow, left, and Kate MacLeod at Ken Sanders Rare Books in
Salt Lake City. The event raised funds for a Joe Hill memorial concert
planned for September in Sugar House Park. Hill was executed in Utah on
Nov. 19, 1915, after being convicted of a murder many people believe he
did not commit. (Jeremy Harmon/The Salt Lake Tribune via AP) DESERET

Ahead of the 100th anniversary of his death in November, his admirers will gather this Labor Day weekend to celebrate his life. Hill is probably best known for being the subject of a poem turned into a song that Pete Seeger made famous in the 1960s called "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night."
"They framed you on a murder charge," croons Seeger, "Says Joe, but I ain't dead." The song was famously performed by Joan Baez at Woodstock and in more recent years by Bruce Springsteen and guitarist Tom Morello of the band Rage Against the Machine.
At Saturday's event, singer Judy Collins is scheduled to headline a concert. Hill became the lead suspect in the 1914 double murder because he was treated the same night for a gunshot wound to the chest. Prosecutors used that as evidence linking him to the killings. Hill reportedly told doctors that he was shot by a jealous friend in a quarrel over a woman, but he didn't present that alibi at trial.
Lori Taylor, a historian and one of the organizers of Saturday's concert, said new evidence uncovered by author William Adler cements Hill's innocence. Hill was assumed to be guilty because police of that era considered members of the Industrial Workers of the World union to be radical criminals, Taylor said. No motive was given by police.
Prior to his execution, Hill sent a telegram to a fellow labor leader that became a rally cry for supporters: "Don't waste any time mourning. Organize."

Some memorable moments in the career of Money May
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The clock is ticking on Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s career.
He claims his fight Saturday night with huge underdog Andre Berto will
be his last, and he will leave boxing undefeated and very rich.

Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. watches during a news conference, Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015, in Las Vegas. Mayweather is scheduled to defend his WBC and WBA Super World welterweight titles against Andre Berto on Saturday.
Mayweather hasn't always been pretty to watch, though that didn't stop 4.6 million people from buying his fight with Manny Pacquiao. A defensive wizard, he fights just enough to win, even if it leaves boxing fans wanting more.
Still, he had some memorable moments on his way to wealth and fame. Here are a few: MAYWEATHER AND 50 CENT: HBO created the "24/7" show for Mayweather's fight with Oscar De La Hoya, and it didn't take long for him to steal the show. In the first episode Mayweather is shown with his entourage getting a haircut in his Las Vegas mansion. Through a doorway comes rapper 50 Cent, riding a Segway. "He's the villain in rap music," Mayweather said. "I'm the villain in boxing." Mayweather and 50 Cent would later split, with the rapper mocking Mayweather for allegedly not being able to read.
WHO BEATS WOMEN? It was early in Mayweather's career when he met Diego Corrales in a clash of two unbeaten boxers. Corrales was facing jail time for beating his pregnant wife and Mayweather vowed to beat him "just like he beat that woman." Mayweather won the fight, knocking down Corrales five times in one of his best performances. But Mayweather would have his own trouble keeping his hands off women, finally serving two months in a Las Vegas jail in 2011 for beating the mother of his children.
NO APOLOGIZING IN RING: Victor Ortiz had just been penalized for a head butt in the fourth round of his September 2011 fight with Mayweather, and he wanted to apologize. Mayweather was good with that, but when Ortiz hugged him one last time after action had already resumed, Mayweather unleashed a left and right that put Ortiz on the canvas. Ortiz was counted out, and Mayweather got his only knockout win in the last eight years.
CINCO DE MAYWEATHER: Mayweather played the villain against De La Hoya all the way into the ring of their 2007 fight, drawing boos from De La Hoya's Latino fans by wearing shorts with the red, white and green colors of the Mexican flag and a white sombrero into the ring against the Golden Boy. The act worked, with Mayweather winning the fight and beginning his career as a pay-per-view money machine.
WRONG DRINK: Technically, this wasn't a Mayweather moment but it was a Mayweather fight. Juan Manuel Marquez was the opponent in September 2009, and the HBO cameras zeroed in on him while he was drinking his own urine in training. "I've done it the last five or six fights with good results," Marquez said. The results weren't good against Mayweather, who dominated the fight on his way to an easy decision win. "That's filth, man, filth," trainer Roger Mayweather said of the training drink of choice.
WRONG BUTTON: The week of his 2011 fight with Miguel Cotto, Mayweather met with a handful of writers to discuss the bout. One set him off with a question about not fighting Pacquiao, and Mayweather stood ranting and raving for the better part of 10 minutes about how Pacquiao used steroids and didn't deserve the fight. "Are you an American?" he asked the writer. "I'm an American and I don't want to see him taking back all that money to another country."
MONEY MAY: He built a persona on money, and has made plenty of it. Mayweather and Pacquiao combined for the richest fight ever, a bout that reportedly made Mayweather some $220 million, though this week he claimed it was more like $300 million. After he beat Pacquiao, Mayweather finished off his press conference and stopped on the way out to show two reporters his down payment for the night. In his hand was a check with his name on it for $100 million.

Cut bananas into chunks and put into the blender – Bananas are best if frozen; this makes the drink chilled.
- Add ½ cup milk and 1 cup ice to the blender.
- Add a scoop of ice cream – This gives the milk shake its richness. Vanilla is standard and will make the milkshake lovely and tasty, but you can choose the flavour you wish. You can even get creative with bursts of different flavours.
- You can choose to add flavours like mango, almonds or even peanuts.
- Blend ingredients until mixture is smooth – If ice is stocked in the bottom of your blender, take a spoon and mix between blending sessions which should not take more than 3 minutes.
- You can choose to garnish your milk shake with syrups of your choice. I personally love to squeeze some chocolate syrup in the sides of my glass cup before pouring the milk shake in it.
